Juvenile Offenders Shoplifting
Seminar
6:00 p.m.
Community Medical Center
$50
Facilitator:
Madeline Skalitza. LCSW. Shoplifting often serves as a method
of coping for people who feel unfulfilled, bored, perhaps
empty. For adolescents who are impulsive and thrill-seeking,
shoplifting may have special allure. But teens don't realize
that shoplifting often has legal and social consequences,
affecting the rest of their lives. The Center for Kids and
Family in Toms River now offers a monthly seminar for teens
who shoplift to provide education and help reduce the number
of repeated offenses. In a combination of discussions and
lectures, the workshop will address issues such as: reasons
for shoplifting; profiles of shoplifters; store security/legal
consequences; effects of shoplifting on society. Pre-teens
and adolescents aged 11-18 with a history of shoplifting
or at risk for shoplifting are appropriate for the seminars.
All attendees must pre-register and be accompanied any
a parent or guardian.
Payment must be made in cash and to be paid at workshop.

This program is based on the Violence Prevention Curriculum

of Harvard. The program addresses issues of violence and
homicide among young people by helping students to become
more aware of: homicide and the factors associated with
it; positive ways to deal with anger and arguments with
anger and arguments which are the leading precipitants of
homicide; how fights begin and how they escalate; the choices,
other than fighting, that are available to young people
in conflict situations. In this program, students are not
taught to be passive or to ignore their anger. The curriculum
recognizes anger as a normal and potentially constructive
emotion. Currently the program is being utilized by the
superior court and county probation as part of the students
court ordered responsibility. The program was also adapted
for use in elementary school with age appropriate revisions.
