As
part of the hospital, dental residents develop knowledge and skills
in all facets of clinical dentistry, from ambulatory and inpatient
care to services for special populations, like the disabled.
Because dentistry is only one aspect of total patient care, they
work hand-in-hand with other physicians as part of a patient’s
health care team. They are part of a clinical environment
that is conducive to learning and instruction on a post-graduate
level.
To augment this emphasis on total care, residents complete rotations
in anesthesiology, internal medicine and emergency medicine, becoming
equipped to be part of the team handling the most critical health
situations.
Interdepartmental consultation and conferences relating to the
variety of inpatient and outpatient populations is encouraged. Residents
are provided with the background and training to manage dental,
as well as medical emergencies. They also develop competence
in treatment planning for patients in varied settings. They
develop routines of hard and soft tissue examination that will
follow into private practice to allow for early detection of oral
cancer. Residents also are trained to develop competence
in four-handed dentistry.
In terms of the academic program, a formal curriculum encompasses
both general dentistry and the basic clinical and physical sciences
as they relate to dentistry. Residents receive expert instruction
in history and physical diagnosis, inpatient consultation, admitting
and discharging patients, anesthetic techniques, and critical literature
review and research methodology.
The department is committed to continuing dental education and
sponsors several state-of-the-art courses each year including Alumni
Day, where residents – past and present – learn together.
