Definition and Complications of Obesity

Body Mass Index, referred to as BMI, is used to determine whether or not a person is overweight and/or obese. BMI is a calculation of your height/weight ratio. The American Obesity Association, provides this formula:

Your Weight (in pounds) x 704.5
Your Height x Your Height (in inches)

According to the The National Institute of Health (NIH) the definitions for obesity for adults are as follows:

Overweight: BMI of 25 to 29.9
Obese: BMI of 30 to 34.9
Severely Obese: BMI of 35 to 39.9
Morbidly Obese: BMI of over 40

Another indicator of being overweight or obese is a waist circumference of over 35" for females or over 40" for males.

Not only can obesity compromise quality of life, but it can also be a significant, contributing factor in the development of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, some cancers, infertility, pulmonary/respiratory problems and gall bladder disease.
