, a major breakthrough for the correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism. The treatment signals a new era in laser vision correction and establishes a new standard for the measurement and correction of the unique imperfections in each individual's vision.
CustomVue potentially enables individuals to achieve their best possible vision. The procedure is based on WaveScan® technology, originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. This technology was adapted for use in laser vision correction to treat nearsighted and astigmatic individuals.
With WaveScan, physicians can now carefully measure the unique characteristics of each individual’s vision and develop a treatment plan tailored just for that person’s eyes. Additionally, patients can “preview” an approximation of their potential vision before undergoing the procedure. Once a WaveScan measurement is taken, patients have the option to create a unique trial lens called a PreVue® Lens, with his or her own unique correction on it. This lens is then fitted into a trial frame so that the patient can preview their new, improved vision.
A clinical study showed that after one year, 98 percent of the participants achieved 20/20 or better vision, without glasses or contact lenses, after the procedure. Anyone 21 years of age or older who wears glasses or contact lenses for the correction of nearsightedness and/or astigmatism may be a candidate for the procedure.
