Anesthesia and Moderate Sedation  973-926-3351

The Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology provides anesthesia and pain management services for infants, children and adolescents. Working together with all surgical subspecialties at Children's Hospital of New Jersey, the pediatric anesthesia team provides care before, during and after surgery with the goal of minimizing both physical and psychological stress to the child.

Through a comprehensive pre-operative assessment, pediatric anesthesiologists determine each child's particular needs and tailor a care plan that is right for them. In doing so the anesthesiologists not only prevent pain during surgery but also address any pain the child may experience as he or she recovers.

Pre-operative care also includes the education of the child's parents to help them understand what to expect, and to allay the fears of both parents and the child. Anesthesia is administered orally, via injection or by inhaled gases, depending on the child's age and physical and psychological assessment.

Pediatric anesthesiologists undergo additional training and have greater depth and experience with pediatric surgical cases than general anesthesiologists. Using specialized pediatric equipment, these board certified physicians provide the following services:

  • general anesthesia
  • regional anesthesia, including epidural, caudal and spinal blocks (for premature infants and others)
  • monitored anesthesia care
  • pain management for the care and treatment of acute postoperative pain as well as chronic pain
