Wilson Avenue School Students Raise Money for Clara Maass Infants and Pediatric Patients

Belleville, New Jersey—On Friday, May 23, fifth grade students from Wilson Avenue School, located in the East Ward of Newark, visited Clara Maass Medical Center with 27 penny-filled baby bottles in tow. As part of the school’s “Penny Drive,” students in grades Pre-K through 8 took part in an effort to raise money to donate to the infants and pediatric patients at Clara Maass.

“We are honored that Wilson Avenue School chose to make this donation to the young patients at Clara Maass Medical Center,” said Thomas A. Biga, Executive Director, Clara Maass Medical Center. “This generous donation will be put toward our continued efforts in meeting the health care needs of our patients. 

Fifth grade students, accompanied by their teacher, Olga Goncalves and principal, Margarita Hernandez presented hospital administration with the penny-filled baby bottles as well as a check for $872.

“We are always grateful to receive the support of the community,” said Jane Newman Kessler, CFRE, Vice President Clara Maass Medical Center Foundation.  “And it is especially inspiring to see students reaching out to help other children who are facing an illness.  We appreciate their generosity, and we are especially gratified that they chose Clara Maass Medical Center as the beneficiary of their gift.”
