The
Cancer Center at Clara Maass is accredited by the American College
of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a community hospital comprehensive
cancer program. A multidisciplinary approach utilizes the expertise
of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, dietitians
and social workers.
The unit features state-of-the-art technology and equipment for
the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and patients have access
to the latest drugs, research and clinical trials.
Diagnostic oncology services include stereotactic breast biopsy,
MRI, CT Scan, ultrasonography and early detection screenings. The
ACQSIM, a CT-based virtual simulator that enables physicians to
map out precise treatment sites with millimeter accuracy, is in
use as well as two linear accelerators and a three-dimensional
mapping system. Treatments range from chemotherapy to surgery to
radiation, including radioactive seed implants for prostate cancer
and high dose rate radiation.
A new state-of-the-art linear accelerator combined with advanced
radiation oncology technology known as Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy
(IMRT) has put the Clara Maass Radiation Oncology Department at
the forefront of radiation therapy treatment.
The inpatient Oncology Unit is staffed by dedicated oncology nurses
and a VIP suite is available. Patients and families can utilize
a solarium and resource area and a nurse educator is on staff to
provide assistance.
