CLARA MAASS MEDICAL CENTER OFFERS LIFE-SAVING ANGIOPLASTY SERVICES

BELLEVILLE, NJ --The Heart Center at Clara Maass Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, now offers Angioplasty Services on an emergency basis as part of the hospital's comprehensive range of cardiac treatment services. The recent expansion of the Medical Center's Cardiac Program provides this life-saving service to the residents of the communities the hospital serves.

"We are pleased to announce that the State Department of Health recently approved Clara Maass Medical Center's request to offer our communities advanced cardiac services," said Thomas A. Biga, Executive Director. "Our skilled and qualified health care team of cardiologists and clinicians stand ready to treat coronary artery disease with angioplasty services 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

Heart disease is the leading killer of Americans, according to the American Heart Association. The most common form of heart disease is coronary artery disease.

Coronary heart disease occurs when the arteries that carry blood to the heart become partially clogged and blocked by deposits of built-up cholesterol and fat. A heart attack occurs when a blockage prevents the heart from receiving the oxygen it needs to function.

Angioplasty is a minimally invasive and interventional procedure performed in Clara Maass Medical Center's state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. This life-saving procedure involves widening the compromised artery to restore blood flow to the heart. A stent is inserted in a majority of cases to assure the vessel remains open.

"The instantaneous opening of the blocked coronary artery has the effect of halting the infarction and restoring blood flow," said Bruce J. Haick, M.D., Director, Interventional Cardiology. "Angioplasty treatment to open clogged arteries in the first hours of a heart attack saves lives and results in better outcomes."
