-Smartlipo System Melts Away Fat, Resulting in Faster Recovery While Tightening Skin-

KEARNY, N.J. May 18, 2007-- Cosmetic surgery has its latest weapon for the battle of the bulge, and Barry DiBernardo, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board certified plastic surgeon at the Aesthetic Surgery Center at Clara Maass Medical Center's West Hudson Division, is armed and ready. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in November 2006, SmartlipoTM is the first and only laser liposuction system to offer a revolutionary and minimally invasive procedure for the removal of unwanted fat.

"This groundbreaking laser procedure essentially melts away fat cells and causes stimulation of the tissue leading to skin tightening," said Dr. DiBernardo. "Results indicate that patients experience rapid healing with little tissue trauma, and post-operative results are evident as soon as one week, with continued improvement over several months."

The SmartlipoTM procedure involves insertion of a small cannula, or metal tube, containing a laser fiber that is inserted through the skin and passed through the treatment area. The laser's energy is then applied directly at the fat cells, causing them to rupture, while preserving the surrounding tissue. In addition, the laser's energy promotes collagen shrinkage, leading to a tissue tightening effect.

Compared to traditional liposuction techniques, laser-assisted liposuction significantly reduces bleeding, bruising, and swelling, and effectively decreases patient downtime. Additionally, the laser uniquely promotes tissue tightening in areas of tissue laxity, resulting in a more sculpted outcome. The device's miniaturization not only provides a minimally invasive approach, the laser precisely targets treatment areas.

"The instruments precision allows for the treatment of previously challenging areas, such as the neck and arms," added DiBernardo. "Patients with skin laxity will be very pleased with the laser's unique tissue contraction capabilities and that can address previously untreatable areas. Patients will also be much more comfortable since bleeding, bruising, and swelling are significantly reduced, allowing them to return to their daily lives very quickly."

The laser liposuction procedure will usually be performed in a single 45 to 60 minute session under local anesthesia, with no stitches or scarring. Used mostly to correct double chins, upper-arm batwings and cellulite, the laser liposuction procedure may also compliment another aesthetic procedure.

According to CynoSure, manufacturer of SmartlipoTM , Dr. DiBernardo will be among 10 to 15 luminaries in the United States that will provide training to physicians seeking to add the Smartlipo procedure to there repertoire.
