BELLEVILLE, NJ - Clara Maass Medical Center publicly unveiled its newly renovated Radiation Oncology Department at a reception and tour of the department, located in the lower lobby level of the Continuing Care Center at Belleville.
The new department underwent extensive renovations to ensure patients receive the finest oncology care in a modern and healing environment. Made possible by a $200,000 grant from the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation, in addition to funds raised through the Clara Maass Medical Center Capital Campaign, the new area features a spa-like motif, including a waterfall, botanical mosaic, burnished copper lighting, and slate floor.
The aesthetic atmosphere is complemented by state-of-the-art equipment, including Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) capability, which provides extremely precise dosage of radiation to the tumor while sparing normal, healthy tissue. Clara Maass is one of only a few community hospitals in New Jersey to have this treatment planning system available.
More than 550 patients receive a total of 10,000 radiation treatments a year at The Cancer Center at Clara Maass, an increase of 15 percent since 1998.
Funding for this project will also be derived from the $3.5 million Clara Maass Medical Center Foundation Capital Campaign. For the past year, the Clara Maass Foundation has been conducting the "quiet phase" of the Capital Campaign for Clara Maass among trustees, medical staff, employees and other friends in the community.
To date, that effort has raised more than $3 million in gifts and pledges. At this celebration, Clara Maass announced the public phase of the campaign to raise the remaining half million. Funds raised through the Capital Campaign will be used to finance additional capital ventures in the Medical Center, including the newly expanded Emergency Department.
