BELLEVILLE, N.J. - The Center for Sleep Disorders at Clara Maass Medical Center's Belleville campus has expanded the size of its facility to now accommodate four patients undergoing sleep studies simultaneously. Located on the lobby level of the Continuing Care Center at Belleville, the facility is conveniently located on the campus of the Medical Center while affording the privacy required to conduct such studies.
Sleep disorders affect millions of Americans but often go unrecognized by both physicians and patients. As many as a third of adults experience insomnia, while two to four percent of middle-aged adults have significant breathing disorders during sleep and suffer from sleep apnea. Other sleep disorders include narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, sleep-walking or other unusual behaviors.
Through non-invasive tests, staff can determine if a patient suffers from a sleep disorder, and then work with a physician to create an appropriate treatment program that can get him/her on the road to recovery.
Symptoms that may suggest a sleep disorder include excessive daytime sleepiness, involuntary dozing during the day, difficulty falling or staying asleep, unusually loud snoring, kicking movement of the legs during sleep, decreased memory or concentration, or depression.
Untreated sleep disorders can have significant medical and social consequences, and may impair work or school performance, increase the risk of injury on the job or while driving, and also negatively impact personal relationships. Since sleep-related breathing disorders are associated with an increased risk of hypertension, cardiac disease and stroke, it is important to get a diagnosis as soon as possible so that treatment may begin.
Four types of studies are conducted and comprehensive evaluations are performed by sleep specialists for patients with sleep-related complaints. Patients may participate in an overnight sleep study and/or a series of nap studies during the daytime.
