Community Medical Center to Host Blood Drive

TOMS RIVER, New Jersey, August 14, 2007--- It is estimated that every few seconds, someone within the New Jersey/metropolitan area needs a blood transfusion.

One blood donor can be a lifesaver to as many as five hospital patients, and the nation is facing a decrease in blood donations at a time of increasing need.

On Wednesday, August 29 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Community Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, will host its summer blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross.

The process of donating blood takes about 45 minutes, which includes registration, laboratory testing for anemia, monitoring of vital signs, drawing of blood and recovery. During the 15-minute recovery period, donors are given liquids, usually fruit juice, and a snack to replenish lost fluids and blood sugar.

Healthy adults who weigh at least 110 pounds are usually eligible to donate blood. At Community, all donors will be eligible for a free raffle for a $25 gas card and a chance to win the $3,500 gas card grand prize For more information or to register for the blood drive, call Community Medical Center at 732-557-8000, ext. 15263.
