Community Medical Center Pediatric Emergency Services Celebrates Child Health Month in October

TOMS RIVER, New Jersey, October 18, 2007--- The safety of children is a focus year-round for Community Medical Center¹s Pediatric Emergency Services, but the commitment takes on added significance during October ‹ a month set aside to stress safety for our nation¹s children.

October was designated National Child Health Month by the American Academy of Pediatrics to help improve the health and well-being of children. Each year, a special focus of the observance is injury prevention, and at Community Medical Center, Laurence DesRochers, M.D., FACEP, chairman of Emergency Medicine at Community, says the hospital supports the observance¹s mission to prevent deaths and disability due to injuries through public education.

Dr. DesRochers points to the Family Safety Checklist compiled by the National Safe Kids Campaign to help parents keep their children safe at home and on the road:

1. Our family buckles up on every car ride.

2. Our family wears bike helmets when bicycling.

3. Kids under 10 never cross streets alone.

4. Kids are always supervised in or near water.

5. Our home has working smoke detectors and we check the batteries monthly.

6. Our water heaters are set no higher than 120 €F to prevent scald burns.

7. If guns are in our home, they are kept unloaded and locked away.

8. Kids are protected against falls from windows, stairs, furniture and playground equipment.

9. Household cleaners, medicines and vitamins are stored out of the reach of young kids.

10. Our home has emergency numbers near telephones and first aid supplies.
