J. Mark Meredith, MD Named “Hero of Emergency Medicine”
TOMS RIVER, NJ, FEBRUARY 14, 2008 – The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has named J. Mark Meredith, III, MD, vice chair of Emergency Medicine at Community Medical Center, a “Hero of Emergency Medicine.” The campaign, which is part of ACEP’s 40th anniversary, recognizes emergency physicians who have made significant contributions to emergency medicine, their communities and their patients.
Dr. Meredith has worked in the Emergency Department at Community Medical Center for the past 14 years. He has seen the hospital’s Emergency Department grow into the largest on the East Coast, and the busiest in New Jersey with more than 95,000 patient visits per year. Dr. Meredith also serves as president of Jersey Emergency Medicine Physicians.
Mark D. Pilla, executive vice president of Operations for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System and executive director of Community Medical Center, said, “Mark Meredith is a dedicated, compassionate and highly skilled emergency physician who has saved countless lives during his time at Community. His vision and leadership has helped to transform our Emergency Department into the largest and busiest in the state. He is exceptionally deserving of the accolade, ‘Hero of Emergency Medicine’.”
Laurence DesRochers, MD, chairman of Emergency Medicine at Community, echoed Pilla’s sentiments. “Mark Meredith truly embodies what it means to be a ‘Hero of Emergency Medicine.’ I can think of no one more appropriate to receive this honor. We congratulate him on this distinction and we are proud to have him as an integral member of our Emergency Department team.”
Dr. Meredith is a former New Jersey ACEP board member and chapter president and a long-time ACEP councilor. He is also a board member of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
“Emergency physicians are on the front lines of America’s health care system, providing the essential community service of emergency care,” said ACEP President Linda L. Lawrence, MD. “The dedication, passion and commitment Dr. Meredith has shown embodies the vision of ACEP’s founders and the ideals of our specialty.” She added, “His interest in furthering the specialty makes him a dedicated hero of emergency medicine.”

Emergency physicians are medical specialists who are experts in their field.”
ACEP is a national medical specialty society representing emergency medicine with more than 25,000 members. ACEP is committed to advancing emergency care through continuing education, research and public education. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, ACEP has 53 chapters representing each state, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. A Government Services Chapter represents emergency physicians employed by military branches and other government agencies.
