Special Procedures or Interventional Radiology is a growing sub specialty in which both vascular and nonvascular diseases are diagnosed and treated. It is a minimally invasive technique that utilizes small catheters and catheter-based instruments. These procedures are performed with local or intravenous sedation and are guided by imaging modalities such as x-ray fluoroscopy, CT or ultrasound.
Interventional Radiology offers an alternative to conventional medical and surgical treatment. The procedures pose less risk to patients and typically decrease hospitalization time.
The majority of procedures require your physician to consult with an interventional radiologist prior to scheduling.
- Requesting Physician’s office must call to initiate the scheduling of an interventional procedure. Information necessary include the following:
- Procedure
- Laterality, if indicated
- Patient current medications, specifically anticoagulants
- Allergies
- Clinical indication for procedure
- Patient name and contact information
- Authorization number if necessary

Special procedures range from 1 to 3 hours. Post-procedure care is also planned by the radiologist and nurse. Patients are monitored in the Same Day Surgery Unit for a prescribed time, depending on the type of procedure performed.
Contrast agents are routinely used in several interventional procedures, especially those that involve the diagnosis or treatment of vascular disease. On rare occasions, the contrast agent may cause an allergic reaction. Patients must inform their physician and the radiology staff of prior allergic reactions and certain medical conditions.
Preparations depend on the type of procedure performed. Pre-procedure lab work and a review of your medications will be done at the time of scheduling. A member of the staff will call the patient the day/evening before the exam to give specific instructions.
