Getting the Rest Your Body Needs

Few people recognize the importance of a good night's sleepFew people recognize the importance of a good night’s sleep. And while our individual needs for sleep may vary, all of us need an adequate amount of rest in order to feel both physically healthy and emotionally refreshed during our waking hours. Unfortunately, for millions of Americans each year, sleeping disorders can make getting a good night’s sleep anything but restful. If you have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or wake up feeling drowsy and lethargic – you may have a sleeping disorder.

Almost all of us experience an occasional sleepless night, but for people with a sleeping disorder, losing sleep night after night is the norm. Sleep problems can increase your risk of illness and the likelihood of accidents. A consistent lack of sleep can reduce your productivity, negatively impact your ability to perform mental and physical tasks, and generally decrease the quality of your life.

Do You Have A Sleep Disorder?

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of a sleeping disorder is the first step toward achieving a better night’s sleep. If you are having trouble sleeping, feel drowsy during the day or experience any of the following symptoms, you may have a treatable sleeping disorder.

  • restless legs
  • excessive use of sleeping pills
  • nightmares
  • sleepwalking
  • nighttime chest pains
  • morning headaches
  • weight gain
  • irritability or personality changes
  • heavy snoring
  • breathing irregularities or sleep apnea
  • shortness of breath at night

If you experience these symptoms, and they persist for longer than a week – or are interfering in the quality of your life – talk with your doctor. He or she may recommend a visit to Community Medical Center’s Center for Sleep Disorders for a consult with a sleep specialist and specialized testing.
