Covenant of Churches Expanding Faith-Based
Services
Saint
Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center maintains
a satellite faith-based program at Bethany Baptist
Church in Newark. Our experience has taught us
that many who live in the inner city are unaware
of hospice services, though many could benefit
from the services and support. Our Covenant of
Churches program, initially funded by a grant from
the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, aims to
educate and raise awareness of end of life and
related health issues for the benefit of the greater
Newark’s
multicultural and diverse population by:
- Volunteer training and support group program
at Bethany Baptist Church and other area churches.
- Providing outreach programs for clergy serving
the greater Newark Community.
- Providing a variety of support programs at
churches and locations in the area.
Our volunteer program prepares individuals to offer respite for caregivers;
to provide companionship to patients in the home,
the hospital or nursing home; to run errands and
provide transportation for both patients and their
caregivers. In addition, volunteers are always
needed for our inpatient unit located at Newark
Beth Israel Medical Center on Lyons Avenue, Newark.
