Kimball Medical Center Surgeon Offers Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat a Host of Medical Conditions

Lakewood, NJ, June 28, 2007 -- A Kimball Medical Center surgeon has introduced to the region the most advanced, state-of-the-art surgical treatment of severe heartburn, hernias and diseases of the intestine, spleen, kidneys and adrenals.

Michael Menack, M.D., specializes in advanced minimally invasive surgery —which is performed through several tiny openings with the aid of a viewing scope known as laparoscope. Advantages of the minimally invasive vs. traditional approach to surgery include less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays and quicker recoveries.
Additionally, because laparoscopic procedures use much smaller incisions, scarring is minimalized and the risk of wound infection or abdominal hernia, which can result from larger incisions, is greatly reduced

“These state-of-the-art techniques undoubtedly improve the quality of life for patients,” Dr. Menack says. “By healing quicker and beginning therapy and rehabilitation sooner, these individuals are on the road to recovery within a matter of days — if not hours — after their surgical procedure.”

Dr. Menack trained in the performance of advanced laparoscopic surgery through a fellowship at St. Vincent Hospital & Health Care Center in Indianapolis. During his fellowship, he received extensive training in the laparoscopic surgical treatment of many abdominal disease processes, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or severe heartburn, hernia repair, colon and small bowel resection, splenectomy (spleen removal), and adrenalectomy (adrenal gland removal). He is one of a select group of surgeons in New Jersey fellowship trained in advanced laparoscopic surgery, and he also has extensive training and experience with intraoperative and laparoscopic ultrasound procedures.

Dr. Menack, who earned his medical degree at Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia and trained in surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania, has published several papers and made many presentations on the subject of advanced laparoscopic surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and his professional affiliations also include the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.

At Kimball, he credits the skill and support of the nursing staff as a key to the success of the hospital’s minimally invasive surgery program. Kimball Medical Center holds the esteemed Magnet Status for Nursing Excellence from the American Nurses Association's Credentialing Center.
