Monmouth's medical staff includes certified
nurse-midwives' registered nurses who are specially trained
to provide normal maternity, newborn and well-woman gynecological
care.
While nurse-midwives focus on delivering care
to women with uncomplicated, low-risk pregnancies---including
prenatal care, labor and delivery management, postpartum care
and normal newborn care---they also work in collaboration with
physicians when a problem in pregnancy arises. In addition,
nurse-midwife provide lifelong gynecological care from adolescence
to the postmenopausal years.
For centuries, nurse-midwives provide women
with family-oriented, personalized obstetrical care, following
a philosophy that pregnancy and childbirth are healthy, normal
life events and offering education, advice and support to mothers-to-be
and their families---before, during and after childbirth.
They focus on delivering care to women with uncomplicated,
low-risk pregnancies and are skilled in the use of advanced
childbirth techniques. As part of The Family Center
at Monmouth's medical team, they work in collaboration with
physicians when a problem in pregnancy arises.
Nurse-midwives also provide women with both
obstetrical and gynecological care throughout their lifetime – from
adolescence to after menopause.
Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses
who have completed advanced studies in women's health and midwifery. They
have graduated from one of more than 30 advanced education
programs accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives
and has passed a national certification examination as well
as New Jersey state licensure under the Board of Medical Examiners.
During pregnancy, nurse-midwives monitor the
health of mother-to-be and their unborn babies.
Patients are
encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle and take an active
part in the educational process by reviewing handout materials,
reading article and books about childbirth and attending childbirth
preparation classes.
It's important that they come prepared
with questions to ask during their prenatal visits.
Women who
receive prenatal care from Monmouth's nurse-midwives deliver
their babies at the medical center.
During labor and deliver, nurse-midwives evaluate
the progress of their patients, offering emotional and physical
support. Although natural childbirth is encouraged,
these professionals can prescribe pain relief medication and
request anesthesia services if the need arises.
After childbirth, nurse-midwives provide education and support
on breastfeeding and infant care, as well as address other
concerns of new mothers.
In addition to providing maternity care, nurse-midwives
provide women with gynecological exams, prescription writing,
assistance with family planning decisions, preconception care,
screening mammography, menopausal management, and counseling
in health maintenance and disease prevention.
