Our Physicians
The Division of Geriatrics at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is dedicated to bringing first-class primary health care to the older adults of Newark and surrounding communities. A team of specially-trained geriatricians and supporting health care professionals address the illnesses and maintain the health of these older patients. Theresa Redling, DO, FACP Dr. Redling received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry School of Osteopathic Medicine of New Jersey. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Morristown Memorial Hospital and went on to finish a Geriatric Fellowship at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. Dr. Redling is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine and Geriatrics at the Mt. Sinai Medical School. Prior to her current appointment, Dr. Redling was the Chief of the Geriatric Division at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Hospice and Palliative Care. Presently, Dr. Redling is the Chief of the Geriatric Division at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center as well as the Medical Director of Newark Beth Israel's inpatient Hospice unit. She has been named on of NJ Monthly's "Top Docs" and was honored as "The 2006 Gerontologist of the Year" by the NJ Society on Aging. Suganthini Umakanthan, MD Board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine, Dr. Umakanthan joined Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in 1997. She received her medical degree from the University of Sri Lanka and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Coney Island Hospital, New York, and a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Her interests include improving care to those residing in Long Term Care Facilities. Syed A. Hussaini, MD Board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine, Dr. Hussaini joined Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in 2001. He is a graduate of Deccan College of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, India. He completed his internship at Howard University Hospitals in Washington, DC. He went on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine, and a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Hussaini’s interests include men’s physical and sexual health, improving health care for older adults and addressing polypharmacy issues Katherina Canales, MD Board certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Canales joined Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in 2006. Dr. Canales received her medical degree from St. George University in Grenada. She completed her residency training at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, and a Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn. Dr Canales’ interests include bringing geriatric education and medical care to the Latino population. Dr. Canales is bilingual speaking both English and Spanish. |
