Medical Oncologists
Our Cancer Center's mission is to meet the physical and emotional needs of our patients. To achieve this goal, we have assembled a team of professionals representing a broad range of disciplines who are highly experienced in and specifically dedicated to cancer care.

Radiation Oncologists
Physicians in our Radiation Oncology Department participate in weekly multidisciplinary Tumor Conferences to discuss particular cases with a team of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists and pathologists to ensure that treatments selected are the result of a team of experts focusing on an individual patient’s specific disease.

Surgical Oncologists
A vital component of our comprehensive, integrated cancer care team, the Division of Surgical Oncology works very closely with Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, and other oncology specialists to provide coordinated, multidisciplinary care for patients with cancer.


Alice J. Cohen, M.D., F.A.C.P., is Director of Dr Alice J. Cohenthe Division of Hematology and Oncology, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and oversees the Flo Okin Oncology and Blood Disorders Center and the Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center. Board certified in internal medicine, hematology and oncology, Dr. Cohen received her bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania and her medical degree from Chicago Medical School in Illinois. Dr. Cohen completed her postgraduate training in internal medicine at New York University and completed research fellowships in hematology and oncology at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Cohen is an investigator for the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.

Dr Frederick B CohenFrederick B. Cohen, M.D., a distinguished oncologist, opened the first cancer clinic in New Jersey in 1965 at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and is the former director of the Medical Center’s Flo Okin Oncology Center. Dr. Cohen earned his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey, his master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Chicago Medical School in Illinois. He completed an internship at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in New York and then came to Newark Beth Israel and completed his residency in internal medicine and hematology. Since 1958, Dr. Cohen has been an attending physician on Newark Beth Israel’s Medical Staff. Board certified in internal medicine and oncology, Dr. Cohen has trained many of New Jersey’s practicing internists and oncologists and has been actively involved in oncology research through the years. He is also a member of numerous medical societies and professional organizations, including the American Society of Human Genetics, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research, and his articles and abstracts have been published in numerous medical journals.

Elois Gwendolyn Rogers-Phillips, M.D., is an attending physician at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and has a private hematology and oncology practice in Newark, NJ. Board certified in hematology and oncology, Dr. Rogers-Phillips received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Indiana University and her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine. Dr. Rogers-Phillips completed her postgraduate training in internal medicine at Freedman’s Hospital, and went on to pursue fellowships in hematology at Yale New Haven Hospital and St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark. She is a past president of the American Women’s Medical Association and a member of several medical societies, including the American Medical Association and the American Cancer Society.

Indu Sabnani, M.D., F.A.C.P., is an attending physician in the division of hematology and oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and is an associate director of the fellowship program in hematology. Board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology, Dr. Sabnani received her bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from S.S. Medical College, Awadesh Pratap Singh University in Rewa, India, and her medical degree in internal medicine from All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India. Dr. Sabnani received postgraduate training in internal medicine at All India Institute of Medical Sciences as well as the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in Bombay, India, and United Hospital Medical Center. She pursued a research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Sabnani is a member of several professional societies and has a special interest in clinical research involving management of breast cancer and colon cancer.

Maya Shah, M.D., is an attending physician in the division of hematology and oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, hematology and obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Shah received her bachelor of science in medicine and surgery from B.J. Medical College and Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, India, and went on to complete an internship in internal medicine and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Civil Hospital. In the U.S., she pursued a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NY.

Amita Kalia-Sharma, M.D., is Associate Program Director of the Fellowship Program for Hematology and Oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Board certified in internal medicine, hematology and oncology, Dr. Kalai-Sharma received her bachelor’s degree and medical degree from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, India. Dr. Kalia-Sharma completed her postgraduate training in internal medicine and completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. She is a member of the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Susan Talbot, MD is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians, an associate member of the American Association for Cancer Research, a corresponding member of the Medical Oncology Group Australia, and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She received her medical degree from the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia.

Before coming to the U.S., Dr. Talbot completed an internship and residencies at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Melbourne, and a medical oncology fellowship through the Victorian Oncology Training Program. Here, she completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York. During her fellowship and an additional postdoctoral year she focused on clinical and laboratory based research for the tumor subtypes of sarcoma and mesothelioma.

Maheshwari M. Desai, MD
Dr. Desai received his degree in medicine from Gujarat University in India and completed his residency training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Prior to coming to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Dr. Desai was the acting director of radiation oncology and an associate attending physician at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers of Brooklyn and Queens in Jamaica, New York.

Robert Ivker, DORobert Ivker, DO, Chairman
Dr. Robert Ivker, the Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Ivker joined the department in 1996. Prior to coming to Newark Beth Israel, Dr. Ivker was an attending physician at Community Medical Center an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.
Dr. Ivker did his training at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City where he served as Chief Resident in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He received his Medical degree from the University of Des Moines, College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Ivker has made clinical research and patient access to state-of-the-art cancer treatments his highest priority. The Department of Radiation Oncology at Newark Beth Israel is one of a select few in the state of New Jersey that is affiliated with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) through its relationship with Thomas Jefferson University. Due to this affiliation the department has access to the most up to date and most promising "cutting edge" treatment protocols, designed to explore new methods of treatment. The goal of these protocols is simple, increase the chance of cure while reducing the risk of side effects.

Dr. Ivker is a member of The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO), American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO), as well as other professional societies. He has and continues to present his work on head and neck, breast, and prostate cancer at national and international meetings. Recently, a chapter on gastrointestinal malignancies (gastric and pancreas) that Dr. Ivker co-authored was published in a textbook for other physicians. He is Board certified by the American Board of Radiology for the practice of Radiation Oncology and is consistently recognized as performing "the first of its kind" procedures in the state. Caring nursing and dedicated healthcare professionals round out a compassionate, multidisciplinary team approach to cancer patients and their families.

Robert A. Wascher, MDRobert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
Director, Division of Surgical Oncology

Dr. Wascher brings extensive clinical and research expertise in the comprehensive surgical management of cancer to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Working closely with other clinical oncology specialists at the Beth, Dr. Wascher's emphasis on minimally invasive approaches to the treatment of many cancers adds significantly to the already wide range of adult oncology services provided by the Frederick B. Cohen Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Wascher received his bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (Honors in Research) from the University of California at Irvine, and his medical degree (magna cum laude) from the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, NE. He completed a surgical internship at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, CA; a neurosurgery fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX; a surgical residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI; and a fellowship in Surgical Oncology and Molecular Oncology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, CA.

Dr. Wascher is a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American College of Surgeons. He is a longstanding member the American Medical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Authors Guild, and the National Institutes of Health Community Clinical Oncology Program.

Dr. Wascher has served as principal investigator and co-investigator for multiple leading national and international clinical cancer trials, and he has a special interest in ethnic variations in cancer biology and epidemiology, as well as cancer prevention strategies at the molecular level.
