NEWARK, NJ -- Emad Hashemi, MD, of Chatham, has been appointed Chief of the new Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. Urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery involves the diagnosis and treatment of women suffering from urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, pelvic organ prolapse, recurrent urinary tract infection, chronic pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction and other disorders of the lower urinary tract and pelvic floor. The new division functions within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) at Newark Beth Israel. Dr. Hashemi offers a wide range of treatment options to women, from conservative management such as behavior modification and changes to diet and exercise, to minimally invasive laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgical procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System. Dr. Hashemi earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX, and his medical degree from Saint George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. He completed his residency in OB/GYN at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident of OB/GYN. Dr. Hashemi went on to complete a fellowship in urogynecology at Athena Women's Medical Center, a teaching affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ (UMDNJ), in Turnersville, NJ. He is the recipient of numerous academic awards and honors including Resident for Special Excellence in Endoscopic Procedures from the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the Pfizer OB/GYN Resident Scholarship, and the Iota Epsilon Alpha International Honor Medical Society at St. George's University School of Medicine. A Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Hashemi is a member of the American Urogynecologic Society and the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists. He also belongs to the International Organization for Women and Development, serving as a member of its fistula repair missionary group in Niger, Africa. On a 2005 missionary trip to Niger, Dr. Hashemi and his colleagues performed more than 50 reconstructive surgeries on women with fistula and bladder damage resulting from prolonged labor. The region is severely lacking in medical personnel, facilities and equipment. Each year close to 3,000 babies are born at the medical center's Mother-Infant Pavilion, which is designated as a Regional Perinatal Center and provides experienced care for both healthy and high-risk mothers and infants.
