Childbirth and Family Preparation Classes

The Women’s Health Education Program encompasses all prenatal childbirth preparation classes. In addition, seminars on women’s health issues are offered through this department. The department, under the direction of Susan Weinstein, R.N., B.S., F.A.C.C.E., has an extensive array of services and programs to meet community needs.

 

The following courses and services are currently offered. To register for any of the classes, complete and follow the directions on the registration form located in your Pre-Admission Packet (obtained at your doctor’s office). Marvelous Multiples Program — This program is designed to educate parents expecting multiples on all aspects of their unique pregnancies, birth options and parenting more than one baby.

Prepared Childbirth Series—First-time parents are prepared for pregnancy, labor, and delivery and are provided with instruction in baby care. Information on cord blood banking is also covered. A birthing room visit is included. Specialty populations, including pregnant women over 35 and parents expecting multiples, have separate curriculums.
Condensed weekend series are available.

Lamaze Refresher Series—This program is a review for couples who previously attended a prepared childbirth series during their first pregnancy. Cord blood banking options are reviewed in this class. Women preparing for a VBAC delivery are encouraged to attend and are grouped together for education.

Sibling Preparation Class—Designed to reduce children’s anxieties when separating with their mothers at the time of delivery. This class promotes a good feeling about the hospital and provides children with realistic expectations of newborn babies.

Breastfeeding Basics—Breast-feeding information and techniques are learned prenatally.

Breast Pump Rental Service—Electric pumps may be rented or purchased through this office. Breast-feeding accessories may also be purchased.

Cord Blood Banking Program — These days, many parents-to-be are choosing to save their baby’s cord blood for the valuable and therapeutic stem cells it contains. Saint Barnabas offers access to the most complete cord blood banking service available, to help best prepare families for the future. Included are options to bank either cord blood alone or to maximize the number of stem cells banked by collecting placental stem cells as well. For more information, please call LifebankUSA

Infant and Child CPR—An overview of infant CPR and guidelines. This program is under the direction of the CPR Training Center. For more information, please call the Training Center at (973) 926-7407.

Grandparenting Seminar—This program familiarizes grandparents with new trends in OB management and child care practices. One of the topics covered is the growing trend of cord blood banking.

Adoptive Parents Baby Care Consultations—This service is available for parents who want one-on-one demonstrations and discussion of baby care techniques.

Women’s Health Seminars—Programs are offered on or off site to educate and promote women’s wellness. Seminar topics included: "Women, Weight and Wellness," "Preparing for Menopause" and "The Mind/Body connection with Women and Wellness."

Pets and Babies—This informative seminar offers tips on introducing the family pet to the new baby. Guest speakers discuss pet/baby interactions.
