Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Saint Barnabas Medical Center
in Livingston, N.J. Dr. Smith, of Essex Fells, was
one of the medical advisors instrumental in creating the
educational photo exhibit. Prenatal Imagery: Art from Within
premieres at Liberty Science Center from June 14, 2001,
through June 20, 2002. Thereafter, plans are underway
for the exhibit to travel across the country.
Livingston, N.J. – Leon
G. Smith Jr., M.D., Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at
Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J., and a
resident of Essex Fells, was among three highly specialized
medical advisors instrumental in creating Prenatal Imagery:
Art from Within, an educational photo exhibit premiering
at Liberty Science Center from June 14, 2001, through June
20, 2002.
The images included in the photo exhibit are
produced by advanced imaging technologies and diagnostic
tools such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and
magnetic resonance microscopy. Such technological advancements
have opened a window onto this complex phase of human life
that has been hidden from human view until the last thirty
years. By highlighting images from a variety of imaging
technologies, in combination with accurate scientific content,
visitors at Liberty Science Center have the opportunity to
understand the developmental process and, according to Liberty
Science Center, “fulfill the curiosity and interest
we all share in prenatal development.”
According to Elizabeth Romanaux, Liberty Science Center’s
Director of Communications, “Beyond demonstrating the
complexity of prenatal development, the images of Prenatal
Imagery stand at the intersection of art and science. The
very technologies created to fulfill health needs also create
images that stand on their own as beautiful, evocative artworks.”
The exhibit encompasses Liberty Science Center themes of
health, environment, and invention, which, together, comprise
the reality of human life on earth. The content addresses
the role of the uterine environment in prenatal development,
the invention of technologies and the effect of these inventions,
and human development and health.
Created by Liberty Science Center, Prenatal
Imagery: Art from Within was designed as a traveling
exhibit. Plans are underway for it to travel to science
museums across the country starting August 2002. The exhibit
is made possible with funding from Johnson & Johnson.
Additional medical advisors involved with creating
the exhibit include Barry B. Goldberg, M.D., Director, Jefferson
Ultrasound Institute and Professor of Radiology, Thomas Jefferson
University Hospital and Medical College in Philadelphia,
and George Bega, M.D., Clinical Instructor, Division of Maternal-Fetal
Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, also at
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Liberty Science Center is a major private, not-for-profit
institution for lifelong, interactive education about science
and technology. It is located in Liberty State Park,
Jersey City, N.J., and is the home to more than 250 hands-on
exhibits on three theme-specific floors -- Invention, Health,
and Environment. For reservations or more information,
the public should call (201) 200-1000 or visit www.lsc.org
