Toms River, NJ --- Over 17 million adults in the United States are alcoholics. Alcoholism can be defined as individuals who have a strong desire or craving to drink; experience a loss of control of drinking; have a physical dependence on alcohol; and who have developed a tolerance to alcohol and need to drink greater amounts each time in order to experience a “high.”
Of these 17 million adults, there are millions more who have been exposed to alcoholism in some way. Many of these individuals are family members whose lives have been deeply affected by their loved one.
Pat Olsen, an established health and business writer, co-authored a book entitled, Sober Siblings, How To Help Your Alcoholic Brother or Sister, and Not Lose Yourself, with Petros Levounis, MD, MA, the Director of The Addiction Institute of New York and Chief of Addiction Psychiatry at St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals in New York City.
Pat Olsen will be hosting a local presentation and a candid discussion of Sober Siblings, an empowering, practical guide that helps brothers and sisters of alcoholics.
During this discussion, Pat will review the difference between helping and enabling; will assist participants to gain greater awareness of his/her own situation; and will also provide practical wisdom and suggestions on coping with feelings of shame, frustration, hopelessness, and anger; and how to help your sibling while not losing yourself.
This program will be held at the Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Center located at 1691 Highway 9 in Toms River. Pre-registration is requested for this program by calling the Saint Barnabas Health Care Link at 1-888-724-7123. FREE.
