Inpatient Tobacco Treatment Program Several months ago, Saint Barnabas Medical Center was given a grant from the New Jersey Medical Society through the Department of Health and Senior Services to develop and test an inpatient tobacco identification and intervention protocol. The program will ultimately provide tested policies, procedures and recommendations, and help clinicians and hospitals to standardize assessment of tobacco use and increase the number of tobacco users who seek treatment. Currently, all patients admitted to Saint Barnabas Medical Center are questioned regarding their tobacco use. A treatment specialist will visit those who answer yes to assess the patient's willingness to participate, discuss treatment options and offer educational materials. With the patient's consent, the specialist will contact his/her physician to begin pharmacological protocol where appropriate. Upon discharge, patients will also be referred to outpatient modalities, including the Siegler Center for Integrative Medicine, which offers a variety of smoking cessation programs. At the conclusion of the 18-month trial, standardized procedures and learning techniques will be designed by Saint Barnabas Medical Center for easy replication throughout the Saint Barnabas Health Care System and at hospitals across the state.
