The Cancer Centers of Saint Barnabas:
Clinical Trials in the News

The Cancer Centers of Saint Barnabas Medical Center are committed to offering the most upto- date treatments available. Saint Barnabas is involved in many clinical trials conducted by both the National Cancer Institute and by individual pharmaceutical companies.

Clinical trials are not for everyone,” says Richard Michaelson, M.D., Medical Director, The Cancer Centers of Saint Barnabas. “Some people are uncomfortable with the concept of clinical studies. Others are not eligible for participation, as many trials have very strict entrance criteria. However, this research is very important as today’s clinical trials lead to tomorrow’s breakthrough treatments.”

Seven clinical trials for breast cancer are currently underway at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Two of them are investigating options for estrogen blockade in women following breast cancer diagnosis. Another is looking at the benefit of several different medications in reducing the chance of metastases to bone after breast cancer surgery. Several are investigating novel approaches in women with metastatic breast cancer, especially women who have not previously received chemotherapy for metastatic disease.

Clinical trials for other malignancies include a trial evaluating various treatment options in women with ovarian cancer who have a rising CA125 with no other evidence of disease flair; options for radiation and chemotherapy after removal of stomach cancer; options for people after resection of colon cancer; treatment options for people with pancreas cancer; and the use of targeted therapies in the treatment of prostate cancer no longer sensitive to lowering testosterone levels (androgen suppression).
