Saint Barnabas Medical Center Celebrates National Cancer Survivors Day – Sunday, June 1, 2003

LIVINGSTON, N.J. -- Individuals whose lives have been touched by cancer are invited to attend Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s annual Celebration of Life on Sunday, June 1, in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day. The special event, held from 12 noon to 4 p.m., celebrates the courage of cancer survivors, the fortitude of their health caregivers, and the support of their loved ones.

Festivities are hosted by The Cancer Center of Saint Barnabas and The Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Saint Barnabas and will take place at the Medical Center, located at 94 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, rain or shine. Celebration of Life will feature exercise/fitness and acupuncture demonstrations, massage therapy, health and wellness information, cancer advocacy information, a survivors art project, Look Good…Feel Better, a buffet lunch, a DJ, live music, face painting, sand and spin art, a clown, and additional activities for children.

The featured speaker is cancer survivor Marlin Fitzwater, a cancer survivor, author, and former White House Press Secretary under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush. Mr. Fitzwater’s first encounter with cancer was in 1972 when he was 30 years old. Diagnosed with basal cell skin cancer, Mr. Fitzwater required surgery that involved removal of most of his nose, which was subsequently grafted with skin from behind his ear. In the last 25 years, he has received treatment for about 200 pre-cancer lesions as well as surgery to remove a half dozen basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers. In 1997, Mr. Fitzwater was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent a radical prostatectomy. He has been cancer-free for the past six years.

Mr. Fitzwater spent two seasons as a consultant to the NBC television drama, The West Wing, and is author of a novel, Esther’s Pillow, as well as Call the Briefing, a best-selling memoir of his ten years in the White House.
