New Image Guided Surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center Helps Surgeons to Enhance a Variety of Procedures Livingston, N.J. -- Surgeons at Saint Barnabas Medical Center now have an advanced image guidance system for neurological procedures, eye, ear, nose and throat surgery, total joint replacement and spinal surgery. The new $400,000 Stryker Navigation System™, made by Stryker Leibinger, uses wireless software and computers to provide surgeons with advanced, three dimensional images of the patient during the operation. The images show surgeons the exact placement of laparoscopic and other equipment within the patient’s anatomy. “This image guidance system is immensely helpful for the surgeon in a variety of procedures,” says Dennis Filippone, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Saint Barnabas. “For example, sinus surgery is performed through the nose and a probe is used to scrape the sinus. If the probe is pushed even 2 or 3 millimeters too far, it enters the brain. Knowing the exact location of the instrument is critical.” The navigational system allows the surgeon to view CAT Scan and other images of the patient and conveniently review the case prior to surgery. During surgery, the equipment is designed to offer precise camera positioning and improved viewing with flexible monitor placement. For neurosurgery, the system provides and advanced image display with a computer screen split into four 3-D images of the interior of the patient. Images from CT Scan/MRI, PET Scans and other diagnostics are fused together to show the surgeon the exact location of equipment within the patient. For spinal surgery, the Stryker Navigation System™ utilizes both three dimensional and multiplanar CT and Fluoroscopic images for navigation along the spine and long bone anatomy. These images assist with precise implant placement. Surgeons performing total knee replacement can use the system’s pre-cut, intra-operative and post-cut assessments of the patient’s joint measurements for better alignment during surgery.
