Saint Barnabas Honors New Jersey Firefighters at The Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation presented eight New Jersey firefighters with the prestigious Valor Award and honored more than 50 additional firefighters with a variety of other awards during the Seventeenth Annual Valor Awards held on October 14, 2004, at the Westminster Hotel in Livingston. Each year, the Burn Foundation, established in 1987 to support The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas, New Jersey’s only certified burn treatment facility, recognizes firefighters and policemen from throughout the state for their heroic endeavors in the line of duty. Honorees are nominated by their respective departments and selected by a committee of peers. Recipients of the 2004 Valor Award included Firefighter Michael Crespin of the East Orange Fire Department; Captain Anthony DellaRosa and Firefighters Robert Fox and Joseph Novembre of the Jersey City Fire Department; Firefighter Paul Lopez and Captain Robert Reed of the North Hudson Fire & Rescue; Firefighter Victor Ortega of the New Brunswick Fire Department; and Firefighter Wayne Taylor of the Jersey City Fire Department. Special Recognition Awards went to firefighters from the Audubon, Dover, East Orange, Jersey City, Maplewood, New Brunswick, Orange, Paterson and North Hudson Fire Departments. The Burn Foundation also presented Team Effort Awards to the North Hudson, Atlantic City, and New Brunswick Fire Departments and the EMS Award to Captain Mark Virag of the Carteret Fire Department. The Raymond Terpanick Police Valor Award was presented to New Jersey State Trooper Alexander Tezsla. Jeff Vanderbeek, Chairman-Managing Partner of the New Jersey Devils, was named The 2004 Humanitarian. The Outstanding Brotherhood Award was presented to Firefighters Robert Heller and Darius Hunt, along with Lieutenants Michael Marino and Joseph Sorbanelli of the Englewood Fire Department. The Civilian Award was given t Robert Meyer, a resident of Union Beach, New Jersey. The Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation provides supportive services and counseling to burn victims and their families treated at The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas. In addition, the Foundation’s educational programs teach burn awareness, prevention and fire safety to thousands of people of all ages through the state.
