Free Education Series to Address Hot Topics for Parents

Saint Barnabas Medical Center, which traditionally treats more pediatric patients than any other hospital in New Jersey, is pleased to offer another series of invaluable, free educational programs, entitled “Hot Topics for Parents.” Physician experts from The Pediatric Specialty Center of Saint Barnabas Medical Center will address key issues regarding child health and wellness.

Eight percent of all children have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and half or more continue to have symptoms as adolescents and adults. Pediatric and Adolescent Psychiatry expert, Mark Faber, M.D., will discuss ADHD and how is it treated at “ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” on September 26, 2006. Also learn about the two-thirds of children with ADHD who have anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders or behavioral difficulties.

On Tuesday, October 10, 2006, Pediatric Neurologist Lara Elizabeth Morse, M.D., Director of the Pediatric Developmental Center at Saint Barnabas, will offer help to parents who question if their child is reaching his or her developmental milestones at the expected times, when parents and caregivers should be concerned, and what can be done to help foster a child’s development at a seminar entitled “Is My Child Developmentally Delayed?”

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood and affects more than five million children in the U.S. It is one of the major causes of missed school days and missed work days for parents. On November 14, 2006, Dorothy Bisberg, M.D., Director of Pediatric Pulmonology at Saint Barnabas, will review the basics and pitfalls of asthma in childhood at “My Child Has Asthma -What Does it Mean?” Learn about asthma triggers, how to recognize an asthma attack and, most importantly, how to prevent or control asthma.

The Pediatric Specialty Center, located at the Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center, offers outpatient pediatric specialty services in the areas of Behavior Development, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Pulmonology, Allergy, Surgery, Neurology and Weight Management. In addition, the Medical Center’s state-of-the-art $8 million Children’s Center is a “hospital within a hospital” designed to meet the medical and emotional needs of young patients and includes child-friendly patient rooms, state-of-the-art nursing stations, new treatment and exam rooms and a cheerfully decorated playroom.

Ample time for questions and answers will be available at each program. All classes will begin at 6:30 p.m. and be held at the Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center, 200 South Orange Avenue in Livingston. Pre-registration is required by calling 1-888-SBHS-123.
