Saint Barnabas Medical Center Installs Revolutionary Livingston, N.J. -- A revolutionary new diagnostic imaging system—with the potential to transform the way doctors are able to diagnose and treat heart disease, stroke and other life-threatening illnesses—is now available at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. The GE Light Speed Volume Computed Tomography (VCT) 64 slice system is hailed as a highly-effective screening tool with the ability to detect, and in some cases, even predict, serious medical conditions before symptoms occur. Using this technology, Saint Barnabas physicians are now able to capture images of a beating heart in five heartbeats, an organ in one second and perform whole body trauma in 10 seconds. Alan J. Garten, M.D., Chairman, chief of Radiology at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and a board-certified diagnostic radiologist, says this new technology is changing how physicians diagnose disease and life-threatening illness. “For our patients, this new 64-slice VCT will mean quicker, more comfortable scans. The increase speed of scanning will allow faster more accurate exams in areas traditionally studied with computerized tomography. It will also allow new applications in the heart, brain and vessels,” Dr. Garten said. In a single rotation, the LightSpeed VCT creates 64 high-resolution anatomical images as thin as a credit card. These images are combined to form a three dimensional view of the patient’s anatomy. From these images, Saint Barnabas physicians can view such things as blockages in the coronary arteries, as well as the motion and pumping action of a patient’s heart. Dr. Garten also explained that the new 64-slice VCT is very patient friendly. “This speed is especially helpful in shortening breath holds for geriatric patients, patients on ventilators and pediatric patients while delivering outstanding image quality,” he said. This new technology allows for acquisition times twice as fast as conventional CTs and provides clear, detailed, images. Studies that can be performed include: 5-Beat Cardiac – Physicians at Saint Barnabas can capture images of the whole heart and coronary arteries in just five heartbeats. This provides clearer images of cardiovascular anatomy and a shorter breath hold for sick and elderly patients. "We're breaking barriers in speed and accuracy of patient exams and are now able to offer new and enhanced diagnostic procedures thanks to our new LightSpeed VCT," said Dr. John F. Bonamo, M.D., M.S., Executive Director at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. The 64-slice VCT scanner is available at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, as well as Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark.
