Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation Marks Opening of Multi-Disciplinary Minimally Invasive Suite
Livingston, N.J.– Recently, Saint Barnabas Medical Center created a Multi-Disciplinary Minimally Invasive Suite which incorporates cutting-edge radiology technology to allow physicians to evaluate and manage blood vessel disease and injury in the heart, brain, major organs, and throughout the circulatory system. “This new, dedicated suite will change how physicians at Saint Barnabas diagnose and treat disease and life-threatening illness and enhance our option to perform minimally invasive procedures,” says John F. Bonamo, M.D., M.S., Executive Director. The Multi-Disciplinary Minimally Invasive Suite will house a high-resolution angiography system -- sophisticated radiology equipment -- to allow physicians to visualize blood vessels and blood flow and detect abnormalities such as aneurysms, blockages, or narrowing. Not only will the angiography system provide accurate diagnostic information, the equipment will allow physicians to treat abnormalities through minimally invasive surgery. Carried by tiny catheters, stents, grafts, and “clot busting” medications can be guided to affected vessels to treat disease and injury. “For a growing number of conditions, it is no longer necessary to perform traditional, open surgery. Instead, catheters inserted through small incisions in the groin, for example, provide the access needed for sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic procedures,” explains Dr. Bonamo. For patients at Saint Barnabas, minimally invasive procedures, translate into shortened recovery time and hospital stays, as well as less pain. In addition, since patients will not endure open surgery, the chance of post-surgical complications and infection are reduced. Most patients return to normal activities son after leaving the hospital. The creation of the Multi-Disciplinary Minimally Invasive Suite at Saint Barnabas was made possible in large part through a gift made to Saint Barnabas by Mrs. Lilyan Kreitchman, of South Orange, in honor of her beloved husband Morton A. Kreitchman.
