Saint Barnabas Medical Center Offers Livingston, N.J. -- The Women's Health and Parent Education Department at Saint Barnabas Medical Center is now offering a new, free support group where new mothers can openly discuss the ups and downs of adjusting to motherhood. The program called The New Mom's Circle, meets weekly and is led by Lauren Meisels Ph.D., a licensed psychologist specializing in maternal mental health and prenatal and postpartum adjustment. The New Mom’s Circle is designed to talk about thy myriad of issues that new mom’s often look to discuss such as transitioning to parenthood and mood changes, as well as less talked about topics including the differences between “baby blues” versus postpartum depression. “Many first time moms are more anxious than depressed,” says group facilitator Dr. Meisels. “They are shocked by the adjustment and lack of sleep, and may be grieving for their loss of freedom and identity. These women benefit greatly by a support group with other women who validate their feelings. They are relieved that others share their thoughts.” The group meets every Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center (ACC), 200 South Orange Avenue in Livingston, across from the Livingston Mall. Room location is listed in the lobby. Infants in strollers or car seats are welcome to attend and free childcare is available, if needed, by calling 973-322-7309 at least 24 hours in advance. While registration is not required, interested women call Dr. Meisels at 973-762-4147 or the Saint Barnabas Women's Health Education at 973-322-5360.
