Proceeds from New Jersey Devils Cow Donated to Saint Barnabas Medical Center
LIVINGSTON, NJ -- Cowabunga! Later this month, 28 fiberglass cows will be auctioned off to help West Orange non-profit organizations. Among the beneficiaries is Saint Barnabas Medical Center, in Livingston, N.J., that will receive the proceeds from “Icing” a cow created by artist Herb Schwartz in honor of the New Jersey Devils, winners of the 2000 Stanley Cup. The cow features New Jersey Devils players as well as the Stanley Cup. Saint Barnabas is one of 36 organizations to benefit from a summer-long exhibit of colorful cows that will conclude with a charity auction, the West Orange CowParade 2000, on Thursday evening, October 26 at The Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange. The Jersey bovines that have been on display throughout West Orange sport a variety of themes including architecture, a school bus, money, Americana, and an array of other artistic renderings. Proceeds for each cow will be earmarked for community charities that include the American Cancer Society, the Thomas Edison Science Museum Foundation and the Yogi Berra Museum, among many others. “Icing” is one of three team-autographed sports cows; the other two include “Moogi Berra” dedicated to the Yankees, and “Bovine-ator” that depicts a cow in a Washington Redskins uniform. “Icing” is currently on display in the main lobby of the Medical Center until the October 26 CowParade. Prior to the auction, “Icing” will be autographed by Devils players, increasing its value as a collector’s item. Cocktails and cow previews will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the auction occurring at 8 p.m. Philips Auctioneers will conduct the event free-of-charge in the spirit of this charity project. Cost is $200 per person with opening auction bids estimated to be $2,000-$3,000 per cow. West Orange Mayor John F. McKeon will be present as well as the numerous other individuals who made this event possible. Special thanks to Dr. John McMullen, former owner of the New Jersey Devils, for donating the proceeds from their cow to Saint Barnabas Medical Center.
