Saint Barnabas Medical Center Offers Free Events Throughout October in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Livingston, N.J., September, 2003– Saint Barnabas Medical Center has planned a month of free activities in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 2003. For the last 18 years, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has promoted breast health education for all adult women. Saint Barnabas activities will take place at The Cancer Center of Saint Barnabas Medical Center, 94 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, N.J. (SBMC) or in the dining room, located on the first floor of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System Corporate building, 95 Old Short Hills (across the street from the Emergency Department entrance) (SBHCS). On October 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., join Patty Wooten, R.N., B.S.N., for an evening of therapeutic humor, during Heart, Humor and Healing. Often called the “Queen of Jest,” Wooten is a leading national expert in the field of therapeutic laughter. Patients and loved ones welcome. This event will take place at the SBHCS dining room.

During Tea and Talk, Jill Kaplan, L.C.S.W., and Angela McCabe, L.C.S.W., will encourage group discussion and simultaneously provide support and camaraderie. This workshop will be offered four times throughout the month and provides an opportunity for individuals to share their experiences and give feedback on what they would like for future programs and support services. Tea and Talk will take place on October 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, October 16 from 3 to 4:30 p.m., October 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, and October 28 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. This event will take place at SBMC, in the Cancer Center Conference Room.

Individuals or their loved ones with cancer are welcome to attend an innovative program, What's New in Breast Cancer Treatment. During this educational session, Ranjana Tavorath, M.D., medical oncologist; Alison Grann, M.D., radiation oncologist; and Sara Schaefer, M.D., breast surgeon; will discuss MRI screening, genetics, clinical trials, treatment of advanced breast cancer, and innovative radiation therapy approaches. This event will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the SBHCS dining room.

This year celebrates the 20th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The Cancer Center of Saint Barnabas supports this important event by sending a team of walkers. While team registration must be submitted by mid-September, others may attend and cheer on the Saint Barnabas team or walk individually. On October 21, join Tamara Bogdanova, art therapist, for a journey of self-expression through the use of art and discussion. Art Workshop: Coping Through Creativity will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the SBMC Cancer Center Conference Room.

For a couple, cancer can be like the game Telephone. He says one thing, she hears something different. She says something, he hears something different. Come join Jill Kaplan, L.C.S.W., and Angela McCabe, L.C.S.W., for “Telephone” - For Couples, on October 23.

Roll the dice, throw the jacks, and navigate through the communication maze. Be the first to hit the jackpot with your significant other! This event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the SBMC Cancer Center Conference Room.

During Women's Health: Turning Confusion and Concern into Information and Insight, Veronica Ravnikar, M.D., obstetrician/gynecologist; Jacqueline Schwanwede, M.D., cardiologist; and Elissa Santoro, M.D., breast surgeon; will discuss women's health issues such as heart attack prevention, hormone replacement therapy, and how to detect breast cancer early. This event will take place on October 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the SBMC Islami Auditorium. (A $20 registration fee will be used to fund a gynecologic clinic for under served women.) On October 27, the American Cancer Society will sponsor Look Good...Feel Better. Look Good...Feel Better helps women cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. This activity will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the SBMC Cancer Center Conference Room.

Also on October 27, Kathleen Francis, M.D., physiatrist; Pat Lipari, R.N., oncology nurse; Marcie Vides, R.D., nutritionist and Jill Kaplan, L.C.S.W., oncology counselor; will discuss Quality of Life Issues for Women with Breast Cancer. Topics such as lymphedema, fatigue, weight-related issues in cancer treatment and intimacy will be addressed. This program will take place in the SBHCS dining room, 1st floor from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Other activities will also be offered throughout the month. These include an October art project; journal books offered in the waiting rooms of the Radiation Oncology Department, Infusion Center and Cancer Center; live music in The Cancer Center waiting room; and reflexology.
