Serena Chen, M.D., of the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science at Saint Barnabas, Receives Award from the
American Fertility Association

Livingston, N.J. -- Serena H. Chen, M.D., Director of the Division of Reproductive Medicine and Director of the Egg Donation Program at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, received a Family Building Award from the American Fertility Association (AFA).

Serena H. Chen, M.D.The AFA Family Building Award honorees are recognized for their commitment and determination to help those with reproductive difficulties. They are honored for using their expertise and dedication to patient care to help couples build families.

The award was presented on Monday, November 7, at the 2005 Kokopelli Ball, which honors the achievements of fertility physicians, scientists, and advocates, and was held at Piers Sixty at Chelsea Piers.

National AFA spokeswoman Brenda Strong, an actress (Desperate Housewives’ Mary-Alice Young) was the master of ceremonies; actor Jason Alexander (Seinfeld’s George Costanza) was a special guest; and television host and author Joan Lunden received a media award.

The AFA is a national fertility patient organization dedicated to educating, researching, supporting and advocating for men and women concerned with reproductive health, fertility preservation, infertility and all forms of family building.

Dr. Chen has significant experience and expertise in the treatment of infertility, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, as well as female reproductive endocrinology. She has also pursued a special interest in polycystic ovarian syndrome, gamete donation and preimplantaton genetic diagnosis.

Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as reproductive endocrinology and infertility, she received her undergraduate degree from Brown University, and her medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology, and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. During her tenure there, she was an Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as well as an Attending at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Bayview Medical Center. She then served as the director of ovum donation at Long Island IVF and attending physician at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
Dr. Chen has published multiple papers and has been the recipient of scientific grants, including the prestigious Stetler Research Grant and the Johns Hopkins Institutional Research Grant. She also has received an award for achievement in laparoscopic surgery from the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.
