Sleep and Its Disorders Addressed at Community Program

Livingston, N.J. --Getting a good night sleep is important for your health, but for millions of people with chronic sleep problems, along with their partners or spouse, it would be a dream to return to the days of sleeping like a baby.

According to The National Sleep Foundation sleep-related studies reveal that not getting enough sleep every night can impair your ability to process carbohydrates, manage stress and maintain a proper balance of hormones.

The impact of snoring, daytime fatigue, insomnia, and other sleep disorders will be discussed at “Sleep and Its Disorders” on Tuesday, September 27, and again on October 25 and November 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

“Research shows that 40 percent of Americans have difficulty sleeping a few times per week; while 1 in 3 says insomnia strikes nearly every night,” says John Penek, M.D., Associate Director of The Kazmir Center for Sleep Disorders at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “Lack of sleep can have serious consequences including high blood pressure, loss of memory, irritability and poor work performance.”

The program, offered free to the public, will be held in the Islami Auditorium at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, located at 94 Old Short Hills Road in Livingston. Discussion and a questions and answer session will be led by a physician certified in sleep medicine. For more information or to register for the program, please 1-888-SBHS-123.
