Fred M. Jacobs, M.D., J.D., Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services since December 2004, has been named Executive Vice President and Director of the Saint Barnabas Quality Institute of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System, effective January 28, 2008. The appointment was announced by Ronald J. Del Mauro, President and Chief Executive Officer.
Dr. Jacobs has a long and distinguished career as a physician, teacher, administrator, and President of the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners. His association with Saint Barnabas Medical Center began in 1969, when he joined the staff and later became Chief of Pulmonary Disease, Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit and President of the Medical Staff. Subsequently, he was named Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs at Saint Barnabas and then Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.

Dr. Jacobs has held many faculty positions, including Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) - New Jersey Medical School. In 2005, he received UMDNJ’s prestigious Medal for Distinguished Leadership. In 1990, Dr. Jacobs graduated from Rutgers University School of Law in Newark and is admitted to the Bars of New Jersey and Florida. He has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees at St. George’s University, Grenada, and Clinical Professor of Medicine at St. George’s University School of Medicine.
Dr. Jacobs earned his three degrees at Colgate University, the University of Miami School of Medicine, and Rutgers University School of Law. He trained in Internal Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center and Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York and completed a Pulmonary research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center and a Chief Residency in Pulmonary Disease at Kings County Hospital Center in New York. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Legal Medicine.
