The PET scan serves as a test for the early detection of recurrent cancer and can accurately assess the location and stage of malignant disease prior to surgery for cancer. It also monitors the effects of treatment non-invasively and produces imaging information of superior quality. PET can also reduce or eliminate ineffective and unnecessary treatment.
