The first step in identifying the right family donor is to determine compatibility through blood testing called blood typing and crossmatching. Tissue typing is inherited from both parents. Each of us has a set of tissue typing numbers from our parents. Once the donor has been found to be compatible through blood testing, extensive testing is then done to ensure that the donor is in excellent heath and can live safely with one kidney.
